Reality Resilience
This section contains information necessary to administer optional Reality resilience software from UNIX or Windows, using the tlmenu administration utility at the host command prompt.
Reality resilience software enhances the ability of a Reality database to recover from an application or system failure, hence reducing the down-time for users. The options described in this section are:
-
Transaction Handling - see Part 2.
The Shadow Database, FailSafe and Disaster Recovery options all require Transaction Logging to be run as well.
Part 8 contains additional information about administering the raw log and clean logs.
Contents
Part 1: Introducing Reality Resilience
Overview of Resilience Options gives an overview of the resilience software that is available with Reality, providing a high-level description of the resilience options covered by this section: Transaction Logging, Rapid Recovery, Shadow Database and FailSafe.
The tlmenu Utility provides an overview of the tlmenu utility including its purpose, syntax, restrictions on use, menus and procedures, examples of use and various other features and facilities of tlmenu.
Part 2: Transaction Handling Reference
Transaction Handling provides an overview of local Transaction Handling in the Reality environment and of Reality?s support for distributed transactions within the MTS/COM+ environment.
Part 3: Transaction Logging Reference
Introduction to Transaction Logging provides an overview of Transaction Logging in the Reality environment.
Configuring Transaction Logging describes the procedures carried out from the tlmenu Configuration and Setup menu to configure Transaction Logging on a Reality database.
Routine Maintenance of Transaction Logging describes procedures carried out from the tlmenu Routine Maintenance menu to maintain Transaction Logging on a Reality database on a day-to-day basis.
Transaction Logging Database Recovery describes the procedures carried out from the tlmenu Database Recovery menu to recover a Transaction Logging database after a failure.
Miscellaneous Transaction Logging Procedures describes two additional procedures carried out from the tlmenu Miscellaneous menu for retrieving an archived clean log and listing active clean logs.
Part 4: Rapid Recovery Reference
Introduction to Rapid Recovery provides an introduction to the purpose, configuration and operation of Rapid Recovery.
Configuring Rapid Recovery describes the procedures carried out from the tlmenu Configuration and Setup menu to configure a database for Rapid Recovery.
Rapid Database Recovery describes the recovery of a failed database configured for Rapid Recovery.
Part 5: Shadow Database Reference
Introduction to Shadow Database provides an introduction to the purpose, configuration and operation of Shadow Database.
Configuring Shadow Database describes the procedures carried out from the tlmenu Configuration and Setup menu to define or redefine a Shadow Database configuration.
Routine Maintenance of Shadow Database describes procedures carried out from the tlmenu Routine Maintenance menu to administer the day-to-day operation of a Shadow Database configuration.
Shadow Database Recovery describes procedures carried out from the tlmenu Database Recovery menu to recover a database protected by Shadow Database software. They include a procedure for making the shadow database the live one, and procedures for recovering the failed database and making it the new shadow.
Miscellaneous Shadow Database Procedures contains a description of the procedure used to reverse the live/shadow configuration of a shadow pair, carried out from the tlmenu Miscellaneous menu.
Shadow Database Host Configuration contains information required for setting up Shadow Database on the UNIX and Windows platforms.
Part 6: FailSafe Reference
Introduction to FailSafe Operation provides an overview of Reality FailSafe, including the purpose and operation of logging in a FailSafe pair.
Configuring a FailSafe Pair describes the procedures carried out from tlmenu Configuration and Setup menu to define or redefine a FailSafe configuration.
Routine Maintenance of FailSafe describes procedures carried out from tlmenu Routine Maintenance menu to administer the day-to-day operation of a FailSafe configuration.
FailSafe Database Recovery describes procedures carried out from tlmenu Database Recovery menu to recover a FailSafe database after a system/application crash.
Miscellaneous FailSafe Procedures describes additional procedures for administering a FailSafe database configuration, carried out from tlmenu Miscellaneous menu.
Part 7: Disaster Recovery
Reality Disaster Recovery provides an overview of a Reality DR feature and describes the relationship between the master and slave databases.
Configuring Disaster Recovery describes how to configure a database as a Reality DR slave and establish the link to the master database.
Disaster Recovery Administration describes the administration tasks that you will need to carry out on a Reality DR system.
Recovering a Database using Disaster Recovery describes how to re-establish the connection to the master database if the link or the slave database fails. It also describes the procedure for transferring control to the slave if the master database fails and for transferring control back to the master when normal operation resumes.
Part 8: Appendixes
Clean Log Administration contains additional information for administering clean logs on a logging database.
Raw Log Administration contains information for locating and sizing the raw log in a Transaction Logging System.
Interactive Recovery of Distributed Transactions describes how to manually recover distributed transactions if the automatic recovery process fails to complete.
