Windows onlyListening Entries

A Listening entry allows the smanager process to accept incoming calls from remote hosts. Listening entries are normally set up when Reality is installed and will not need to be changed unless the local system's network connection is altered. For every network type in use there must be one Listening entry and there may be two: one DDA and one character mode (telnet). Note, however, that if you have more than one Ethernet controller you will need entries for each.

A Listening entry contains the following information:

Listening Entry The name of the Listening entry. Each Listening entry must have a name which is unique with respect to other Listening entries.

Address (optional)
The IP address for a Listening entry. This is only necessary if the system has multiple network interfaces.

If supplied, the IP address must be in the format n0.n1.n2.n3, where n0, n1, n2 and n3 are decimal numbers in the range 0-255. If no value is supplied, or the value is * the default local IP address is used.

Protocol This must be set to one of the Telnet Security (LBS) modes. This defines the mechanism by which smanager generates a PLId.

Port The number of the TCP port to be used. This will normally be 23 for Telnet or 1203 for DDA.

However, if you have selected one of the telnet LBS multi-port or calling port protocols, you will need to choose a port number that does not conflict with any other network services. This will depend on the number of ports required (specified in the multiport range parameter - see below and the topic Telnet Security). Make sure that the range you choose does not contain any other services. A suggested value is 1400.

If no value is given, the default port will be used (see Options).

Multiport range This parameter is only required if you have specified one of the telnet multi-port or calling port protocols. Enter the number of ports required (see Telnet Security for details).

Logon prompt The text of the logon prompt displayed when a remote user logs on.

If you clear this field, the default prompt will be used (see Options).

Prompt timeout The timeout in milliseconds during which the user must enter a user name. If no entry is made in the specified time, the connection will be dropped by smanager. The default, if no timeout is specified, is 60000 (1 minute).

Note: Two additional fields, Transport and Interface, currently have the fixed values TCP and SOCKETS respectively.

netadmin option 3 - Listening Ports allows you to add, delete, edit and list Listening entries. Selecting this option displays the menu:

Northgate NETWORK ADMINISTRATION - LISTENING PORTS
1. Add listening entry
2. Edit listening entry
3. Delete listening entry
4. List listening entries
Select action [1-4 / q] :

Adding an Entry

To add a Listening entry, select option 1 from the Listening Ports menu. The following sequence of prompts is displayed.

  1. Enter listening port name [ListeningPortName / q] :
     >>

Enter the name by which the Listening port is to be known. If the new name already exists you are re-prompted.

  2. 1. TELNET
    2. DDA

    Select the protocol [1-2 / (n) / q] :

Enter a menu item number to select the applications protocol required to communicate with the remote software. Press RETURN to select the default protocol, n; this is set in Session Manager Options.

  3. Enter the port number [PortNumber / (n) / q] :

Enter the local port number to which the remote host will establish a connection. If the selected protocol is the default specified in Session Manager Options, the default port number (n) is that specified as the default in Session Manager Options. Otherwise the default is 23 for TELNET protocol and 1203 for DDA.

  4. Enter the IP address or domain name to be listened upon.
     * will listen on all local IP addresses [Address / (*) / q] :
     >>

Enter the local IP address or IP domain name to be listened upon, or enter * to request that all local IP addresses are used.

If you have selected the DDA protocol, go to step 7.

  5. If you selected the TELNET protocol in step 2, you are now prompted to select the location-based security (LBS) mode with the menu prompt:

    00 Standard telnet mode
    01 Send location
    02 Multi-port
    03 Send location, else multi-port
    10 Calling port
11 Send location, else calling port
    18 Multi-port, suppress telnet
    Select LBS mode [0-3 / 10 / 11 / 18 / (0) / q] :

Enter the required LBS mode. The LBS mode determines how the incoming PLId is structured and, consequently, can provide location based security. Refer to Telnet Security for a description of these modes.

If you selected mode 0 or 1, go to step 7.

  6. Enter number of ports [Number / (1) / q] :

Enter the number of sequential physical ports. The client, typically a terminal server, has a number of sequential physical ports which are associated with a sequence of TCP/IP ports starting at the port number entered in step 3.

  7. You are then prompted to select the login message to be displayed on terminals making connections via the Listening entry.

    Enter login prompt [Prompt / (\r\nREALITY Session Manager on %m% (%d%) (Telnet)\
    r\n\nLogon please :) / n:none / q] :
    >>
    • Enter the required login message or press RETURN to accept the default. The message must be an alphanumeric text string containing \r for a carriage return and \n for a line feed. %n% specifies the host name and %d% the default database name.
    • Alternatively, enter n to leave the field blank. The default prompt defined in Session Manager Options will be used.
  8. Enter login timeout [Seconds / (6) / q] :

Enter the time period in seconds within which a user must login to the system, after the login prompt has been displayed, before the terminal is disconnected.

  9. The complete entry is then displayed, followed by a confirmation prompt. Enter y to save the entry, or n to discard it.

Note: When you quit from the main netadmin menu, you will be asked if you want to refresh the session manager. New listening entries cannot be used until the session manager has been refreshed or restarted.

Editing an Entry

To edit a Listening entry, select option 2 from the Listening Ports menu.

  1. The names of the existing entries are displayed - enter the number of the required entry. If there are more than 20 entries, press return to display the next list.
  2. The details of the selected entry are displayed, followed by a prompt that allows you to change the entry name - enter a new name if required or press RETURN to retain the current name.
  3. The remaining prompts are the same as when you add a Listening entry, except that the defaults are the current values.

Note: If you have changed a listening entry, when you leave netadmin, you will be asked if you want to refresh the session manager. Changes to listening entries do not take effect until the session manager has been refreshed or restarted.

Deleting an Entry

To delete a Listening entry, select option 3 from the Listening Ports menu.

  1. The names of the existing Listening entries are displayed and you are prompted to enter an entry number. If there are more than 20 entries, press return to display the next list.
  2. The details of the selected entry are displayed, followed by a prompt asking you to confirm that you want to delete the entry. Enter y to delete the entry, or n to keep it; you are then returned to the menu.

Note: If you have deleted a listening entry, when you leave netadmin, you will be asked if you want to refresh the session manager. Deleted listening entries will continue to be available until the session manager has been refreshed or restarted.

Listing Entries

To list the Listening entries, select option 4 from the Listening Ports menu.

  1. The names of the existing Listening entries are displayed and you are prompted to enter an entry number or * to list the details of all the entries. If there are more than 20 entries, press return to display the next list.
  2. The details of the selected entry are displayed. Press RETURNafter each entry to display the next one, or enter q to return to the menu. At the end of the list you are returned to the menu.
