Overview

This topic contains an overview of UNIX-Connect: the facilities it provides and the way it works. It is important that you read and understand the information contained in this topic before attempting to configure UNIX-Connect.

Product Overview

The UNIX-Connect software runs on UNIX systems supported by Northgate and enables communication between the UNIX environment and the Reality and SovereignX environments.

There are a number of different versions of UNIX-Connect:

It forms an integral part of Reality on UNIX and RealityX.
It is available separately as ROSI-UNIX for UNIX systems supported by Northgate.
It forms an integral part of SovereignX.
SovereignX Networking.

Reality on UNIX and RealityX

As an integral part of Reality on UNIX or RealityX, UNIX-Connect allows communication between Reality and:

The UNIX environment on the local system;
Other Reality databases on the local system;
Remote Reality databases;
Remote Series 19 systems;
Remote UNIX systems supported by Northgate.

ROSI-UNIX

As ROSI-UNIX, UNIX-Connect enables communication between the UNIX environment and:

Remote Reality databases;
Remote Series 19 systems;
Remote UNIX systems supported by Northgate.

SovereignX

As an integral part of SovereignX, UNIX-Connect provides:

Background processing;
Printing services.

SovereignX Networking

As SovereignX Networking, UNIX-Connect allows communication between:

SovereignX environments.
Multiple SX processors;
SX and UNIX systems.

Network Types

UNIX-Connect supports the following types of network connection:

TCP/IP.
OSI - both full- and null-network layer.
X.25 - including XUI (X.25 User Interface) connections to Reality.
Local Loopback - for connections between two processes on the same system. For example, local loopback allows a UNIX client program to communicate with a Reality DataBasic server on the same system.
