E - External Read

Displays another item and then returns to the current item.

Command

E

Action

Press E to initiate display of another item in the same file. The Status/Command Line prompts for the name of the item to be read:

READ from :

Enter the item-id of another item in the current file. The external item is displayed on the screen but cannot be modified. The Status/Command Line displays:

Display mode (E=exit) file-name item-id

While displaying the item, you can use any cursor control commands to display and read any part of the item. All Screen Editor commands are inoperative with the exception of Locate character. Press E at any time to return to the item currently being edited.

Comments

The External Read function is useful when merging lines from another item and you need to know the line numbers in the external item.  You can freely scan the item using the Cursor Control commands and Locate character.
