P - PASTE

Operation

The cut and paste commands allow you to copy or move a selected text string to another location in the same item or to remove it from the item and place it somewhere else at a later time.

When the text is cut, you are prompted for a name. The cut text is then saved in an item in the current file. The item-id is the name you enter with the suffix -CP  to distinguish it from other items in the file.

Cutting and Copying

In Edit Mode, the [ key acts as the Cut key. The first press of the [ key defines the start of the string to be cut or copied.

The Status/Command Line displays Cut ON  to show that the cut command is operational.

Only cursor control commands are allowed until the second press of the [ key. If any other Edit key is pressed, the cut command is cancelled and the Cut ON  message disappears from the Status/ Command Line.

To define the end of the string to be cut or copied, press the [ key a second time - the Status/Command Line prompts:

PASTE item-id:

Enter the name for the string to be saved. For example, if you type "New.string", the item created has the item-id "New.string-CP".

If that item-id already exists, the Status/Command Line prompts:

Already on file - Overwrite?:N

If you accept the N  response, the system returns you to the PASTE item-id prompt. If you enter Y, the system overwrites the existing item.

The Status/Command Line then prompts:

Remove cut string?:N

If you press Y, the string is cut from the current item and saved. Otherwise, it is copied and saved but not deleted from the current item.

Displaying a Cut Item

Press ' (Display) at any time in Edit Mode to display a string that has been previously cut or copied and saved in the current file.

The Status/Command Line prompts for the item-id of the string to be displayed.

Pasting

Unlike the cut and paste commands in many systems, the paste operation need not follow the cut operation immediately. You can have many cut or copied strings stored in temporary items.

Press P (Paste) to insert a previously cut or copied string into the current item at the current cursor position.

The Status/Command Line prompts for the item-id of the string to be pasted. For example:

PASTE item-id :JUNK

The item JUNK-CP is pasted in the current item at the current cursor position.

You can execute the Paste command from within any item in the file in which the cut item was saved.

When you paste an item, the Status/Command Line prompts:

Delete Paste item :N

Press Y to delete the item item-id-CP from the current file. Otherwise, the item is retained for further use. You can cut or copy a string and then paste it into numerous locations before deleting it.
